Petra Mattheis

Petra Mattheis (born in Moers, 1967) lives and works in Leipzig, Germany. Her current work on the subject of menstruation is provocative, witty and definitively ruthless, while she seeks to free the topic from its negative connotation in our society. With her prints and installations, mostly kept in red, she questions the historic-cultural development of our society and illustrates a taboo with activist passion.

Jean-Christophe Ammann, Sammlungsleiter Deutsche Börse :

Petra Mattheis thinks sculpturally - in images. In a time-consuming manner, she extracts texts from wooden surfaces. She builds letters individually, in a spacious way. Spacious not only because her works are three-dimensional. In her work the term spacious refers to the experienced and traveled space, the space that makes use of intimacy to point to cultural and art historical convetions.
